Internet Use Policy

Internet access is available for patrons with a valid RCLS card. The library's Internet access is intended as an information resource. The library does not provide electronic mail.

The Internet allows users to connect to networks of resources outside the library. The Wallkill Public Library has no control over these resources nor does the Library have complete knowledge of what is on the Internet. Information on the Internet may be reliable and current or it may be inaccurate, out-of-date, or unavailable at times.

Library patrons use the Internet at their own discretion. The Internet contains material that may be considered controversial or inappropriate. Parents or legal guardians must assume responsibility for deciding which library resources are appropriate for their own children. The Library supports parents and guardians in their efforts to guide their children's access to print, non-print, and electronic information. Children who use the Internet without supervision may be exposed to inappropriate or disturbing information and images. Parents have the responsibility to discuss the use of the Internet with their children in relation to family values and boundaries, and to monitor their children's use of the Internet. The Library's staff is not in a position to provide this monitoring supervision. The Library Board shall develop rules and procedures that are necessary to insure the fair and reasonable use of Internet resources.

The Library encourages use of web guides designed to steer children to quality sites. KidsClick! (http://www.kidsclick.org) and Kids' Search Tools (http://www.rcls.org/ksearch.htm) are examples of guided web searching. Both sites were created by the Ramapo Catskill Library System, of which the Library is a member. For more information on children and the Internet, see My Rules for Online Safety (http://www.safekids.com/kidsrules.htm) or The Librarian's Guide to Cyberspace for Parents and Kids(http://www.ala.org/parentspage/greatsites/guide.html).

Librarians do not provide individual assistance in using the Internet. Due to the complexity of the Internet, it is strongly suggested that library patrons familiarize themselves with Internet searching techniques before attempting to use it. If additional assistance is needed, a librarian can provide patrons with materials on how to search the Internet.

Failure to use the Internet station appropriately and responsibly will result in revocation of Internet use privileges. The Library cannot guarantee that patrons who use the Internet will have privacy in their communications and other Internet uses.
