History

Orangeburg Library has had several homes over the years. First beginning in a train depot in the 1960's, the Library soon outgrew and moved to a storefront location at Prel Plaza in 1972. The relocation also included the ambitious proposal of creating a central library to serve all Orangetown. In following through, the Orangeburg Library relinquished its charter to the newly formed Orangetown Public Library. The Library was challenged by stormy, political opposition, and was evicted from Prel Plaza in 1973 for non-payment of rent. The reconstituted Orangeburg Library was relocated to a portion of the old Greenbush School where it still resides. The Library was completely renovated and modernized in 1998. Since the renovation, the Library has been recognized as a warm, user-friendly place with a renaissance in library services. Orangeburg Library has excellent collections of fiction, biography, magazine and audiovisual materials.
