The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, by Jean-Dominique Bauby.
October 28th at 7:30 p.m
Bauby, whose rare stroke left him paralyzed and speechless, ignited a fire of imagination under himself and lived his last days spiritually unfettered. This compelling account of his life as a “vegetable” is full of humor and devoid of self pity.
Discussion to be led by Chris Godwin, Professor of English, Orange County Community College, retired.
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America,
by Erik Larsen.
November 18th at 7:30 p.m.
Larson’s engrossing tale of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 focuses on two men: Daniel Burnham, the architect who was the driving force behind the fair, and Henry Holmes, the cunning serial killer who used the fair to lure his victims to their death.
Discussion to be led by Vara Neverow, Professor of English at Southern Connecticut University.
One Thousand White Women: the Journals of May Dodd, by Jim Fergus
December 9th at 7:30 p.m.
In 1854, Cheyenne Chief Little Wolf asked for 1,000 brides for his warriors in exchange for 1,000 horses. Using this true incident, Fergus creates the fictionalized account of May Dodd in the controversial “Brides for Indians” program, a clandestine U.S. government sponsored program intended to instruct “savages” in the ways of civilization.
Discussion to be led by David Turk, Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Nyack College.
