Library Assistant

Avg. 15 hours/week - includes 1 evening/week and 2 Saturdays/month
Wednesday: 9:45 am – 4:45 pm
Thursday: 2 pm – 8 pm
1 Saturday per month at 12 pm – 4 pm
1 Saturday per month at 9:45 am – 4 pm
RESPONSIBILITIES: Circulation desk duties (checking materials in and out); retrieving materials from the outdoor book and media drops; fulfilling requests from pull list; placing requests for patrons; operating the cash register; opening and/or closing the library on assigned days (includes arming and disarming alarm system and startup/shutdown of all computers); assisting patrons with use of public computers, locating materials, placing requests, etc.
Assisting in providing reference and reader’s advisory service; assisting with directing patrons to commonly used materials; creating basic fliers, press releases, booklists, bookmarks, or displays of materials as needed; assisting in instructing patrons on how to use computers to access the internet, databases, catalog, and other electronic resources such as e-books and digital audiobooks; answer questions from patrons regarding library exhibits and displays; conduct talks and programs under the supervision of a librarian as assigned; May supervise Pages by assigning and evaluating work
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of Internet and online catalog; working knowledge of basic computer procedures such as desktop publishing, accessing databases, printing; ability to answer basic patron questions; ability to follow procedures; ability to read and comprehend written material; ability to work independently; ability to use a computer to prepare basic newsletters, fliers and press releases; ability to work effectively, tactfully and courteously with patrons and staff; ability to express ideas clearly and accurately, both orally and in writing; ability to attend to details; ability to work alone; available to work regular evenings and weekends; ability to lift up to 30 lbs, ability to shelve materials on high and low shelves and to empty outdoor book and media drops
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. A Bachelor's degree; or 2. An Associate's degree plus three (3) years equivalent work experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: experience in an RCLS library
PAY RATE: $19.50/hour
